A Legal Nurse Consultant (LNC) is a registered nurse who applies their clinical expertise and specialized education to serve as Testifying Experts (TEs) or Consulting Experts (CEs), providing assistance in medical aspects of legal cases or claims.
Consulting Expert (CE)
• An expert who is not expected to testify, but consults with attorney-client behind the scenes, preps attorney and helps attorney develop the case.
• Can typically review and analyze all aspects/disciplines without consulting limitations.
Testifying Expert (TE)
• An expert who is expected to testify at deposition or trial.
• Testimony is limited to areas of professional expertise.
Legal professionals frequently encounter difficulties with the medical aspects of a case, such as deciphering medical abbreviations and acronyms, defining terminology, interpreting medical records, and providing expertise. They are typically not well-versed in procedures, protocols, or standards of care pertinent to their case due to their lack of medical training.
LNCs act as a liaison between the legal and medical realms, deciphering medical records, educating the legal team on the medical facets of the case, and evaluating if the patient received appropriate care. Leveraging our clinical nursing experience and inherent knowledge, we can readily identify the subtleties of medical conditions and/or injuries, their treatments, causes, and potential complications.
Although numerous individuals and software programs can summarize records and generate reports, our intrinsic knowledge and nursing background are vital in identifying the most crucial information for building a legal case. This expertise allows us to carry out this task with greater efficiency, ensuring that the most critical details are correctly assessed.
Legal Nurse Consultants (LNCs) bring a wealth of skills and expertise to your legal practice, enhancing your ability to handle medical-related cases effectively. Here’s how:
Experience: LNCs have extensive clinical backgrounds, enabling them to expertly interpret medical records, documents, and medical-legal issues.
Cost-effectiveness: Leveraging their nursing background and healthcare standards knowledge, LNCs can pinpoint the strengths and weaknesses of a case, making the process more efficient and cost-effective.
Resourcefulness: With a vast network of medical and professional contacts, LNCs can provide valuable resources and insights to support your case.
Knowledge: LNCs possess a deep understanding of medical issues and trends throughout the litigation process. They can tailor their expertise to meet the needs of attorneys, clients, and juries, ensuring a comprehensive approach to each case.
